Welcome to novato high school - UPDATE
Dear Parents and Students,
Parents play a critical role in preparing their students for finals. Our final exams are coming up very soon. Finals will be conducted starting Tuesday, December 17 – Friday, December 20, 2013. I feel it necessary to share the following information with our parents.
At the end of every academic semester, high schools prepare for their final examinations during dead week. Our dead week at NHS is December 9-13, 2013. We avoid any activities on campus that will distract students and staff from preparing for finals. It is also, at the same time, the responsibility of parents to support their student at home as they prepare for finals.
Parents should know that examinations are a time of great stress for students, especially the difficulty in preparation. One basic thing that parents can do is to make themselves available to their student, particularly during these days. Taking some time off and being with your student during these stressful times would be very helpful to students. With your parental support at home the exam preparation process can really help your student achieve their best results.
The study environment in which the student has to study is important. Parents should play an important role in providing a quiet study area free from distractions. Students do prefer to study in a quiet environment.
Parents can refer their students to our tutoring services here after school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the library from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Tutoring will also be available during dead and finals weeks. We have a certificated teacher supervising the tutoring program with reliable and good tutors who can assist the student. Another option is to find a close friend or relative who can also be of assistance. The underlying idea is to get the right kind of specific help. Sometimes close friends or relatives are better able to tutor your student than a stranger. This doesn’t mean that our tutors are not essential. They are, but a student may learn best with someone they know.
Some students under exam pressure are prone to making mistakes that can result in failure and consequent disappointment. In such situations, parents should restrain themselves from negativity. Another chance is always possible for the student to correct his / her mistakes and succeed. Parents and guardians need to remember this and continue to show their support and acceptance in times of disappointment. This can be crucial to a student’s long-term productive development.
Parents should remember that final exams can be a time of great stress in the lives of students, especially since high school grades mean so much in the college acceptance process. Every form of assistance is needed from everyone associated with a student’s development to make sure they are supported.
Teachers, administrators, counselors, staff, and yes, parents play a critical role in the success of students during their final exams.
Thank you for your support of both student and Novato High School!
